Nuclear astrophysics plays a pivotal role in understanding several issuses concerning our Universe, with particular regards to stellar energy generation and nucleosynthesis in quiescent and explosive scenario. Among the different topics:

  • Nuclear astrophysics investigates the synthesis of the light elements (namely, deuteron, 3He, 4He and 7Li) in the theoretical framework of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). Indeed, BBN represents one of the three pillars of the Big Bang theory togheter with the Hubble expansion and the existence of the relic Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. Although CMB and Hubble expansion have been proved, BBN remains still under debat expecially for the long-standing comsmological Li-problem, i.e. the strong disagreement by a factor about 2-3 between halo objects (stellar) observations and those inferred from CMB studies.
  • A second aspect of relevance in the global picture of nuclear astrophysics is represented by the role played by the so-called light elements lithim, beryllium and boron (LiBeB) in stellar physics. Because of their fragility against (p,alpha) reactions in stars, they are easily burnt a temperatures of few millions of Kelvin typical of the basis of the convective zone in F-G stars. Thus, by detecting their residual abundances it is possible to infer information about plasma mixing occurring in stars.
  • A third aspect of relevance regards the synthesis of heavy elements, mainly occurring via both the s-process and the r-process.

My activity research is mainly focused on the following topics:

  1.  Big Bang Nucleosynthesis Measurement of the producing/destroying nuclear reactions of interest for the cosmological lithium problem. Measurement of the producing reaction cross section for the process 7Be(n,alpha)4He and the 7Li(p,alpha)4He;
  2. Light elements LiBeB Measurement of the destroying (p,alpha) process involving 6Li, 7Li, 9Be, 10B, 11B in correspondence of the energy region of interest for astrophysics, i.e. inside a Gamow energy of few keV's;
  3. s-processes and neutron poison reactions Measurement of the neutron induced reactions of interest for the s-process at stellar temperatures, responsible for the nucleosynthesis of elements heavire than those belonging to the Iron peak;
  4. Indirect Methods for Nuclear astrophsysics  Measurements of the previously mentioned reaction cross section via the application of the Trojan Horse Method (THM). The method allows one to measure astrophysically relevant two-body reaction cross section overcoming all the difficulties related to direct measurements such as Coulomb and/or centrifugal barriers penetration effects, electron screening and faint signal-to-noise ratio

The research activity is mainly performed at Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (INFN-LNS) of Catania although several experiments have been performed in national (INFN-LNL of Padova, UniNa of Napoli) and international (Texas A&M, College-Station USA; CRIB-Riken Japan; IPNO, Orsay Paris...) institutions.
