
Giuseppe INTURRI
Introduction
He has been a Transport Engineer since 1986 and holds a PhD in Transport Engineering and Economics since 2000.
Currently, he is a Full Professor of Transport at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Catania.
Teaching
He has taught:
- Transport Planning in the Master's degree program in Environmental and Land Engineering
- •Transport Systems Modeling Laboratory in the Master's degree program in Civil Engineering for Water and Transport
- Master’s in Transport Systems: Modal Integration and Sustainable Mobility Management
- Master’s in Networks for Territorial Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
- •Master’s in Airport Safety Management
Currently, he teaches:
- •Sustainable Transport Engineering and Transport Systems Management in the Bachelor's degree program in Civil and Environmental Engineering (L7)
- Transport Planning in the Bachelor's degree program in Territorial and Landscape Planning and Environmental Sustainability (L21)
Institutional Roles
Since 2014, he has been the Rector’s Delegate for Mobility, and since 2016, he has been the Representative for the Network of Italian Universities for Sustainable Development, where he serves as National Deputy Coordinator of the Mobility Group. In these roles, he contributed to initiatives such as free public transport passes for university students in Catania and the Metro Shuttle line, which received Legambiente awards in 2018 and 2019 as urban best practices, and the U-MOB European project award for the best university sustainable mobility initiative in Europe.
Since 2022, he has also been the Rector’s Delegate for Sustainability.
Research
He conducts research in the field of transport planning and sustainable mobility. He is the author of over 140 publications in international journals and conference proceedings, 112 of which are indexed in databases, with over 2,500 citations and an h-index of 31.
As a member of the PhD board in “Urban and Territorial Risk Assessment and Mitigation,” he has supervised six PhD graduates.
He has been the scientific coordinator for four research grants and over 50 curricular and post-graduate internships.
He has represented the University of Catania in several research projects funded by the European Commission and PNRR.
He is the Principal Investigator of the National Research Project “SMARTR3FLITS”, which studies innovative demand-responsive transport services for low-demand areas, and S3CAMPUS, which focuses on innovative mobility services for the university.
Third Mission (Outreach and Public Engagement)
He was the scientific coordinator for the drafting of several mobility plans (PUT and PUMS of Catania), and conducted various feasibility studies for the funding of major transport infrastructures, including:
• The Catania Metro
• The Palermo Tram
• The Siracusa-Gela Highway
• The Commercial Port of Augusta
He served as a technical manager at Ferrovia Circumetnea, where he participated in the design of the metro line.
He was also one of the creators of the BRT line and the seafront bike lane.
