
Giacomo CAPIZZI
Giacomo Capizzi received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) in electronic engineering from the University of Catania, Catania, Italy, in 1993, and the Ph.D. degree in electronic and computer engineering from the University of Reggio Calabria, Reggio Calabria, Italy, in 2000. From 2000 to 2002, he was a Lecturer with the Department of Electrical, Electronics, and System Engineering, University of Catania, where he joined as an Assistant Professor in 2002 and n January 7, 2022, he assumed the position of associate professor of electrical engineering in the same department (now named : Department of Industrial, Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering ).
He served as the project leader and proposer for the University of Catania on the SYNERGY project. This European project “aims to strengthen scientific potential through the creation of international partnerships among leading universities to achieve a high level of expertise and excellence in research within the framework of the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange’s international academic partnership program.” The project lasted two years and began on December 1, 2018. The other partners are: University of Cambridge, UK; University of California, Irvine, USA; Monash University, Melbourne, Australia; Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan; Queen’s University Belfast, UK; Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen, Denmark; Luleå University of Technology, Luleå, Sweden; University of Minho, Portugal; Montanuniversität Leoben, Leoben, Austria. The cooperation, within the framework of the SYNERGY project, includes:
1) Researcher exchange. 2) Scientific collaboration aimed at publishing results in high-impact international journals and jointly drafting and submitting international projects. 3) Organization of international seminars and conferences.
He is the coordinator for the University of Catania of the cooperation agreement between the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering and the Faculty of Applied Mathematics at the Silesian University of Technology (Poland). The cooperation includes (but is not limited to):
1) Exchange of researchers for joint research activities, organization of international seminars and conferences, coordination of visiting professors, and other aspects of interdisciplinary exchange. 2) Exchange of information, resources, and research laboratories for joint projects and research activities. 3) Joint activities in the field of teaching at all levels of academia.
Since March 2017, he has served as an advisor to many visiting scientists and visiting professors at the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering at the University of Catania.
Since June 2014, he has been a regular collaborator with international research groups composed of researchers of various nationalities and involving several universities: Czestochowa University, Czestochowa, Poland; Kaunas University of Technology, Kaunas, Lithuania; Silesian University of Technology, Poland; and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel.
Coordinator of the Erasmus+ agreement between the University of Catania and MEF University Istanbul (Turkey). Agreement signed on January 31, 2024. Valid from the 2024–2025 academic year through the 2027–2028 academic year.
He was coordinator for the Erasmus+ agreement between the University of Catania and Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Portugal). Agreement signed on November 17, 2016. Valid from November 17, 2016, to October 30, 2020.
He served on the examination committee for the doctoral program in Informatics Engineering at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania, evaluating the final examination for the award of the PhD degree.
He has served as an “Invited Professor” at the Silesian University of Technology (Poland) since the 2015–2016 academic year to the present, teaching a 60-hour course in the Faculty of Applied Mathematics on “Algorithms and Paradigms for Pattern Recognition and Image Processing.”
His research interests include: wavelet theory, machine learning, statistical pattern recognition, deep learning, theory and design of linear and nonlinear digital/analog filters, integrated energy generation systems, renewable energy sources, and modeling and simulation of energy storage batteries.
