Roberta AVANZATO
Roberta Avanzato is a RTD-A in Telecommunications at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, University of Catania, where she has been carrying out research and teaching activities since March 2023.
Scientific Activities
During the 2024-2026 period, her scientific activity focused on the use of artificial intelligence and deep learning for the processing of signals, images and multimodal data. Within the RESTART project, she worked on multimodal rainfall-estimation techniques based on audio, video and radio data. As Scientific Lead for the VIA-SICURA project activities, she is responsible for the definition and validation of video-analysis models for recognising flooding and hydrogeological phenomena. Her other research interests include computer vision for animal welfare, PCG- and ECG-based biometrics, localisation, and wireless network optimisation. Her results have been published in international journals and presented at scientific conferences.
Editorial Positions
She served as Session Chair at IEEE WCNC 2025 and is a Technical Program Committee member for IEEE GLOBECOM 2026 IoTSN. Actually, she is Guest Editor of the Special Issue Advances in Image Processing and Computer Vision Based on Machine Learning, 2nd Edition, MDPI Electronics.
Teaching
During academic years 2023-2024, 2024-2025 and 2025-2026, she taught in the MSc programmes in Communications Engineering and Data Science at the University of Catania. She co-taught, in English, Biometrics and Multimedia Forensics in the second year of Communications Engineering and Big Data Sensing, Compression and Communication in the second year of Data Science, for the Data Analysis and Modelling and Data Driven Applications curricula. In academic year 2023-2024, she also taught, in Italian, the Computer Science module of Preparatory Sciences in the first year of the BSc programme in Hearing Aid Techniques.
