I coordinate the research activities of the S6 project regarding social video surveillance in a 5G network.

I am one of the founders of the University spinoff Lightcomm srl.

I was born in Catania, Italy, in 1968, and graduated from the University of Catania (Italy) with a master degree in Electronic Engineering in October 1991. I work at the University of Catania, in the Telecommunications Group of the DIEEI Department from 1995, where I am an Associate Professor since January 2005.

My research interests mainly concern with software defined networks (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), 5G, Tactile Internet, traffic modeling, cloud computing and data center management, mobile cloud networks.

I am co-author of over 170 papers published in international journals or presented in leading international conferences. You can browse through my publications, many of them are available in PDF together with some slides.

I have been (and currently I am) in the Organizing or TPC committees of leading conferences, as Infocom, Globecom, ICC, NetSoft, FNC, and more.

I am currently Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, and Guest Co-Lead Editor of the IEEE TNSM Special Issue on "Advanced Management of Softwarized Networks".

RESEARCH PROJECTS

DiMoViS: Distributed Mobile Video Surveillance (DiMoViS) in a 5G Ecosystem

  • DiMoViS is an experiment activity on the Triangle Testbed.
  • It aims at reproducing a small Proof of Concept (PoC) of a bigger capillary video surveillance platform over a 5G network infrastructure with a huge number of IP cameras, that in the future could be even wearable or installed on drones or on any mobile vehicles, and that may rapidly change their Internet access point.
  • More in deep, the experiment consists in realizing a 5G network with access points realized according to heterogeneous technologies (i.e. WiFi and cellular), that allows some users (video surveillance service providers, or even third-party users that share their cameras with the former) to switch on their fixed or mobile video cameras, whose flows are automatically recognized by the 5G network, and steered through pre-determined paths.

INPUT: In-Network Programmability for next-generation personal cloUd service supporT

  • INPUT is a research project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program (Call H2020-ICT-2014-1, Grant no. 644672). The project, started in Juanuary 2015, aims at designing a novel infrastructure and paradigm to support Future Internet personal cloud services in a more scalable and sustainable way and with innovative added-value capabilities. The INPUT technologies will enable next-generation cloud applications to go beyond classical service models, and even to replace physical Smart Devices, usually placed in users’ homes (e.g., set-top-boxes, etc.) or deployed around for monitoring purposes (e.g., sensors), with their virtual images, providing them to users “as a Service.”
