Full Professor of Electronics [ING-INF/01]

Gaetano Palumbo received the laurea degree in Electrical Engineering in 1988 and a Ph.D. degree from University of Catania in 1993. In 1989 he was awarded a grant from AEI of Catania. Since 1993 he conducts courses on Electronic Devices, Electronics for Digital Systems and basic Electronics. In 1994 he joined the DEES (Dipartimento Elettrico Elettronico e Sistemistico) at University of Catania, now DIEEI (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica Elettronica e Informatica), as a researcher, subsequently becoming associate professor in 1998. Since 2000 he is full professor in the same department.

His primary research interest has been analog and digital circuits. In particular, regarding analog circuits particular emphasis has been devoted to feedback circuits, compensation techniques, current-mode approach, and low-voltage circuits. Regarding digital circuits his investigation has ben devoted to bipolar and MOS current-mode digital circuits, adiabatic circuits, and high-performance building blocks focused on achieving optimum speed within the constraint of low power operation. In all these fields he is developing some research in collaboration with STMicroelectronics of Catania.

He was the co-author of 5 books, 4 of which on microelectronics and circuits "CMOS Current Amplifiers", "Feedback Amplifiers: theory and design", and "Model and Design of Bipolar and MOS Current-Mode Logic (CML, ECL and SCL Digital Circuits) " and "Flip-Flop Design in Nanometer CMOS: From High Speed to Low Energy" all by Kluwer/Springer, in 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2014, respectively; and one is the textbook on electronic devices " Introduzione ai dispositivi elettronici" published by Franco Angeli in 2005. He is a contributor to the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He is the author of more than 460 scientific papers on referred international journals (over 215) and in conferences (with Scopus h-index equal to 44 with more than 6700 citation). Moreover he is co-author of several patents.

In 1999/2001 and 2004/2005 he served as Associated Editor of the IEEE Transaction on Circuits and Systems part I for the topic "Analog Circuits and Filters" and "Digital Circuits and Systems", respectively.

Since 2002 he is a member of Analog Signal Processing Technical Committe of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

Since 2003 he is also a member of VLSI Systems and Applications Technical Committe of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

In 2003 he received the Darlington Award (Purpose: To recognize the best paper bridging the gap between theory and practice published in IEEE Transaction on CAS Part I or Part II, during the two calendar years preceding the award).

In 2005 he was one of the 12 panelists in the scientific area 09 - industrial and information engineering of the CIVR (Committee for Evaluation of Italian Research), which has the aim to evaluate the Italian research in the above area for the period 2001-2003.

In  2006/2007 he was  Associated Editor of the IEEE Transaction on Circuits and Systems part II.

In 2008/2011 he served as  Associated Editor of the IEEE Transaction on Circuits and Systems part I.

In the period 2011-2013 he was member of the Board of Governors of IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

In 2015 he has been a panelist of GEV (Group of Evaluation Experts) in the scientific area 09 - industrial and information engineering of the ANVUR for the Evaluation of Italian Research Quality in 2011-2014.

In 2016 he was the Committe Chair of the CASS for the IEEE Fellow nomination.

Since 2018 for 2018-2020 he was the Vice-Chair  of the SIE (Società Italiana di Elettronica) where he was on the board since 2015.

Since 2019 he has been on the Editorial Board of the ope journal Electronics.

Since 2022 he is Editor in Chief of the open journal Chips: https://www.mdpi.com/journal/chips.

Prof. Palumbo is Fellow IEEE.
