MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS

Bruno Andò is a researcher in sensor and measurement fields. His main research interests include: novel sensing methodologies, Nano and Micro sensors, inkjet printed sensors, sensors exploiting innovative materials (ferrofluids, ferroelectrics and multiferroics), multi-sensor data fusion, smart multi-sensor architectures for Active Assistive Living, sensor networks, advanced signal processing and nonlinear techniques (including and dithering).

Since 2002, Bruno Andò shares his research experience with readers of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Magazine by writing periodical columns.

In the following a list of major achievements is reported which led to publications in international journals, coordination of research projects and patents.

Since 2002 Bruno Andò deals with Stochastic Resonance and Dithering to improve performances of sensors and bio-receptors working in a noisy environment. Moreover, the possibility of using noise  to improve performance of non linear measurement systems has been demonstrated.

Since 2003 Bruno Andò is deeply involved in the development of novel sensing methodologies and Assistive Technologies to improve the life quality of weak people (Active  Assisted Living-AAL) with particular regards to blind people and elderly people. In particular, a number of multi-sensor systems have been developed to assist weak users in daily actions by providing them with a suitable information on surroundings and incoming dangerous events. The adopted approach exploits novel methodologies for user localization and for the estimation of his/her physical status as well as to gain mutual user-environment awareness.

Moreover, Bruno Andò participates as an expert to international activities in the field of Ambient Assisted Living, as evidenced by the following activities:

- since 2010 he is a member of AitAAL (Italian Association on AAL) and he is a member of List of supporters of AAL OPEN ASSOCIATION - AALOA, (http://www.aaloa.org/);

- 2011, he was in the Technical Program Committee of “EvAAL (Evaluating AAL Systems through Competitive Benchmarking)” competition organized by AALOpenAssociation on “Indoor Localization”, Valencia, 2011;

- 2013, he is currently in the Technical Program Committee of “EvAAL competition“, AALOpenAssociation, focused on “Indoor Localization and Activity Recognition”, 2013.

Since 2004 Bruno Andò is involved in the development of multi-sensor systems for the monitoring of volcanic activity and associated phenomena. Examples of activities in this field are a novel strategy for investigating cooling lava properties and a lab-scale experiment to measure terminal velocity of volcanic ash.

Since 2005 he is strongly involved in the development of novel and low cost solutions for the characterization of functional materials for sensors such as ferroelectrics, piezoelectrics, multiferroics and ferrofluids. In particular, he developed novel methodologies for the characterization of the dielectric and pyroelectric properties of ferroelectric material and a low-cost experimental setup for the characterization of piezoelectric cantilever bimorphs.

Since 2005 Bruno Andò is working on the development of innovative sensors exploiting non linear sensing mechanism and novel materials. An important contribution is related to the development of FluxGate magnetometers exploiting a time domain readout strategy. The sensing methodology exploits the non linearity of a ferromagnetic core to improve the sensor responsivity. The research activity in this field led also to the development of non linear E-Field sensors based on the use of ferroelectric materials. Above sensors have been used in single and coupled ring configurations.

Efforts have been also dedicated to the development of sensors and actuators based on the use of magnetic fluids. In particular, inertial sensors, tilt sensors, gyroscopes, flow sensors and a number of actuators for flow control represent main results of several years of research in the field.

Since 2006 Bruno Andò works on advanced processing of signals coming from sensors and instrumentation adopted for the monitoring of volcanic activity. In particular, he developed a novel methodology for reducing the effect of meteorological parameters on continuously recording gravity meters. Another product of this research activity is the development of an advanced video-based system for monitoring active volcanoes.

Since 2010 he is working on innovative solutions for the development of low cost InkJet printed sensors such as strain sensors, capacitive pressure sensors and gas sensors. The same technology has been also used for the realization of non linear harvesters based on a compressed beam in Snap Through Buckling configuration.
