
Giovanni SCHEMBRA

Giovanni Schembra è Professore Ordinario di Telecomunicazioni presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale, Elettrica, Elettronica e Informatica (DIEEI) dell’Università degli Studi di Catania. Ha conseguito la Laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica presso l’Università degli Studi di Catania nel 1991. Dal 1991 al 1992 ha svolto attività di ricerca presso il Telecommunications Research Group del CEFRIEL di Milano, occupandosi di modellazione del traffico e valutazione delle prestazioni nelle reti a banda larga.
I suoi principali interessi di ricerca riguardano le reti 5G e 6G, la softwarizzazione e l’intelligenza delle reti, l’Edge e il Far-Edge Computing, l’O-RAN, le reti basate su UAV e le Flying Ad Hoc Networks (FANET), nonché il Quantum Internet. Le sue più recenti attività di ricerca sono focalizzate sull’integrazione tra Intelligenza Artificiale e tecnologie avanzate di networking, sulle comunicazioni e le reti quantistiche e sull’impiego degli UAV come piattaforme mobili di comunicazione e calcolo per applicazioni di extreme-edge computing, tra cui la videosorveglianza e il monitoraggio ambientale in scenari rurali e di smart city.
È Associate Editor della rivista IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management e ha ricoperto il ruolo di co-Lead Guest Editor di Special Issues della rivista dedicate alla gestione delle reti softwarizzate. Dal 2017 è membro dell’Organizing Committee della IEEE International Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft). Ha partecipato e coordinato numerosi progetti di ricerca e ha organizzato workshop ed eventi scientifici internazionali sui temi della softwarizzazione e dell’intelligenza delle reti, delle reti basate su UAV e delle tecnologie emergenti per le telecomunicazioni.

Giovanni Schembra è Professore Ordinario di Telecomunicazioni presso il DIEEI – Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica Elettronica e Informatica dell’Università degli Studi di Catania, dove è membro del Gruppo di Telecomunicazioni.
La sua attività scientifica è focalizzata sullo sviluppo di reti e sistemi di comunicazione di nuova generazione, con particolare attenzione all’integrazione tra telecomunicazioni, Intelligenza Artificiale, sistemi autonomi e tecnologie quantistiche.
Laboratori di ricerca e sviluppo
È coordinatore di tre laboratori di ricerca e sviluppo del DIEEI:
- AMIP Lab, dedicato allo sviluppo di tecnologie basate su Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) per la videosorveglianza, il monitoraggio ambientale e il remote sensing, con particolare attenzione all’utilizzo dell’Intelligenza Artificiale per l’analisi automatica delle immagini e dei dati acquisiti da piattaforme aeree.
- 5G&B Lab, dedicato alla ricerca e alla sperimentazione di reti 5G, 6G e Future Networks, con attività che comprendono reti softwarizzate, Edge e Far-Edge Computing, Network Intelligence, orchestrazione delle risorse e architetture radio di nuova generazione.
- Quantum Internet Lab, dedicato alla ricerca e alla sperimentazione di tecnologie per il Quantum Internet, con particolare riferimento alla trasmissione di informazione quantistica su reti locali e geografiche e alla realizzazione di link quantistici tra droni e stazioni terrestri, nonché tra piattaforme mobili e infrastrutture terrestri.
Coordinamento di progetti di ricerca
Coordina le attività di ricerca dell’AI-PHOQUS, progetto dedicato allo sviluppo di infrastrutture e tecnologie per reti e collegamenti quantistici di nuova generazione, sia in ambito locale sia geografico. Le attività comprendono anche la sperimentazione di link quantistici mediante droni e robot terrestri, finalizzata allo studio di nuove architetture per reti quantistiche distribuite.
È Responsabile Scientifico del progetto 5G-MIRAGE, finalizzato alla realizzazione di una rete 5G indoor/outdoor presso l’Università degli Studi di Catania, destinata alla sperimentazione di servizi e applicazioni avanzate basati sulla connettività 5G.
Ruoli istituzionali
È Presidente del Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Communications Engineering (LM-27) dell’Università degli Studi di Catania.
Ricopre inoltre la delega rettorale come Operatore UAS presso l’Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile (ENAC), con responsabilità relative alle attività dell’Ateneo nell’ambito dell’utilizzo di sistemi a pilotaggio remoto.
Formazione e carriera accademica
Nato a Catania nel 1968, ha conseguito la Laurea in Ingegneria Elettronica presso l’Università degli Studi di Catania nell’ottobre 1991.
Dal 1995 svolge attività di ricerca e didattica presso il Gruppo di Telecomunicazioni del DIEEI dell’Università degli Studi di Catania. È Professore Ordinario di Telecomunicazioni dall'ottobre 2024.

È coautore di oltre 230 pubblicazioni scientifiche su riviste internazionali e negli atti di conferenze scientifiche internazionali.

AI-PHOQUS (Link)
AI-PHOQUS costituirà un nuovo contesto multidisciplinare di collaborazione di soggetti pubblici e privati, integrando progressivamente l'AI e le QT basate su atomi e fotoni con la filiera della fotonica, della fabbricazione e delle reti avanzate. La combinazione di QT, fotonica ed AI, nel contesto di reti avanzate ibride – classiche e quantistiche – ha un potenziale enorme e pervasivo in ambiti sia scientifici che industriali. Il contesto scientifico ed infrastrutturale di AI-PHOQUS costituirà un esempio unico sia nello scenario italiano che europeo ed un volano straordinario per l'economia e lo sviluppo tecnologico nel nostro Paese, soprattutto al Sud.
