Vincenza Torrisi, PhD, is currentlly Assistant Professor (RTD-A) in Transportation Engineering at the Department of Industrial, Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (DIEEI) of the University of Catania (UNICT).
She obtained her BSc in Civil Engineering in 2011 and her MSc in Water and Transportation Civil Engineering in 2013 at the University of Catania, both with honours. In 2017, she obtained her PhD in Evaluation and Mitigation of Urban and Territorial Risks with a dissertation on real-time road traffic monitoring, estimation and forecasting through Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
In 2023, she obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) for the position of Associate Professor in the field of Transportation Infrastructures and Systems.
Her research focuses on the planning, modelling, simulation, monitoring and management of transport systems, with particular emphasis on Intelligent Transport Systems, traffic supervision systems, traffic flow estimation and forecasting, and the integration of data from sensors and multiple sources to support transport decision-making.
Her research interests also include sustainable mobility planning, multimodal transport systems, traffic microsimulation, pedestrian mobility, public transport, shared mobility, freight transport and logistics. More recently, her research has expanded towards multimodal transport modelling and decision-support tools for Digital Twins of urban mobility.
She is responsible for the management of the ITS Laboratory at the University of Catania, where she works on traffic monitoring, estimation and forecasting systems, transport modelling, mobility data management and traffic supervision systems.
She is the lecturer in charge of “Planning and Design of Transport Systems” and “Lab on Sustainable Transport Systems” at the University of Catania. Her teaching combines theoretical and applied approaches through transport simulation models, GIS tools, data analysis and real-world case studies.
Since 2024, she has been responsible for a research programme at the “Antonio Ruberti” Institute for Systems Analysis and Computer Science of the Italian National Research Council (CNR-IASI), within the “Urban Intelligence Science Hub for City Network” (UISH) project, focusing on multimodal transport modelling and the development of the Digital Twin of mobility for the city of Catania.
She is Vice President of the Sicily Section of the Italian Association for Traffic and Transport Engineering (AIIT).
She is the author of scientific papers published in international journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings and serves as a reviewer and editor for international scientific journals. She has also been involved in national and international research projects and scientific activities.
