Simone PALAZZO

Associate Professor of Information processing systems [ING-INF/05]

Simone Palazzo is Associate Professor of Information Processing Systems at the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering (DIEEI), University of Catania, Italy. He co-directs the PeRCeiVe Lab at the University of Catania, where he leads research activities on computer vision, generative and multimodal models, federated learning, continual learning and explainable AI.

He is the author of 170+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, with an h-index of 37 and 4,200+ citations (source: Scopus). He currently supervises or co-supervises seven PhD students across programs at the University of Catania and the National PhD in Artificial Intelligence (Health and Life Sciences area, Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome).

As principal investigator or unit coordinator, he has secured competitive funding totalling over € 600,000, including the Horizon Europe project ECS4DRES (grant agreement 101139790, about € 400,000 for the University of Catania unit), the PRIN PNRR 2022 project RESILIENT (about € 85,000), and research activities within the PNRR project FAIR (Future Artificial Intelligence Research).

He has organized numerous workshops and special sessions at international venues including CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ACM MM, MICCAI, ICPR and ICASSP. Prof. Palazzo serves as Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology since 2024 and has guest-edited special issues in Computer Vision and Image Understanding, Journal of Imaging, Sensors and Information. He is a regular reviewer for major IEEE, Elsevier and Springer journals and serves on the program committees of top-tier conferences including CVPR, ICCV, ECCV and ICLR.
