Fabio Antonio BUSACCA

Assistant Professor of Telecommunications [ING-INF/03]

Fabio Antonino Busacca received his B.S. in Electronic and Computer Engineering in July 2017 from the University of Messina, and his M.S. in Telecommunications Engineering in October 2019 from the University of Catania, both summa cum laude (110/110 with honors). In November 2022, he completed his Ph.D. in Information and Communication Technologies at the University of Palermo. From October 2021 to April 2022, he was a Visiting Ph.D. Student at the Roux Institute of Northeastern University (Portland, Maine, USA).

Career and Research Interests

Since 2023, he has been an Assistant Professor (RTD-A) at the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering of the University of Catania. His research interests include 5G & Beyond networks, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), the Internet of Things (IoT), the application of Artificial Intelligence and Federated Learning to networking, Game Theory, and Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) algorithms. He is also actively involved in underwater acoustic communications (Internet of Underwater Things, IoUT) and the LoRa protocol within LPWAN architectures. In September 2021, he received the "Francesco Carassa Award" at the GTTI annual meeting in Lecce. He has co-authored 12 journal papers and 22 peer-reviewed conference papers.

Institutional Projects and Editorial Duties

From October 2024 to March 2026, he served as WP5 Leader for the SUPER project, within the RESTART research program. He is currently a Guest Editor for the Elsevier journal Computer Networks for the Special Issue on "Reconfigurable Networks: Enhancing Performance and Sustainability in Access Networks and the Edge-to-Cloud Continuum".

Scientific and Organizational Activities

He has been actively involved in organizing international conferences, holding the following roles:

  • Workshop Chair for IEEE/IFIP WiOpt (June 3-6, 2026).

  • TPC Chair for the 3rd MOSC Workshop, jointly held with IEEE/IFIP WiOpt (June 3-6, 2026).

  • Publicity and Sponsorship Chair for ACM MobiHoc (October 27-30, 2025).

  • Founder and Organizer of the AIoT Workshop at ACM MobiHoc (2023 and 2024 editions).

  • Web Chair and Session Chair for the IFIP Networking Conference (June 13-16, 2022).

Furthermore, he has served as a Technical Program Committee (TPC) member for numerous international conferences, including DCOSS-IoT (2025, 2026), ICIN (2026), MAIN (2026), IEEE SECON (2026), MedComNet (2024, 2025), and ACM MobiHoc (2025).

In addition, he has delivered tutorial sessions at the International Conference on Intelligence in Next Generation Networks (ICIN, March 30 - April 2, 2026), the IEEE Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC, January 9-12, 2026), and the European Wireless Conference (September 9-11, 2024).

Teaching and Supervising Activities

At the University of Catania, he is the primary instructor for the courses "IoT and Big Data: Sensing, Compression & Communication" and "Big Data Sensing, Compression & Communication". Previously, he taught "Digital Communications" (A.Y. 2022/2023). He is actively involved in academic supervision: to date, he has served as the advisor for 5 Master's students, the co-advisor for 1 Master's student, and the co-tutor for 2 Ph.D. students.
