Daniela Giordano received her Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Catania in 1990 and her PhD from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, in 1998. She is Full Professor of Computer Engineering and teaches Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Computing.

From 2013 to 2020, she served as Chair of the Master’s Degree Programme in Computer Engineering. From 2014 to 2021, she was co-responsible for the educational activities of “Contamination Lab Catania”, a university pilot project funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). She is the coordinator of the Catania node of the CINI National Laboratory on Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems (AIIS) and co-founded the Perceive Lab (http://www.perceivelab.com), which currently brings together six faculty members and researchers and 15 PhD students. Since 2024, she has served as Chair of the Departmental Joint Committee for Students and Faculty.

She has been Scientific Coordinator of a European research project and Principal Investigator of the local research unit in numerous other projects funded through competitive regional, national, European, and international grants. These projects have addressed research topics ranging from biomedical informatics and advanced e-learning systems to information systems for mobility and logistics.

Her research is strongly interdisciplinary and focuses on cognitive systems and learning processes in both artificial and natural systems. A significant part of her research activity has been devoted to the development of Artificial Intelligence technologies for applications in the medical and environmental domains and for improving human–machine interaction, through pattern recognition in images, videos, and biosignals, as well as automatic knowledge extraction from text.
