Gianpiero EVOLA

Associate Professor of Building physics and building energy systems [ING-IND/11]

Graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2001 from the University of Catania, he obtained his PhD in Environmental Technical Physics in 2007 from the University of Palermo.

He is the author of over 80 papers presented at national and international Conferences, more than 60 publications in international scientific journals, 6 publications in national technical journals, and 7 book chapters regarding building energetics.

Teaching activity:

  • 2007-2010: Adjunct Professor at the University of Catania for "Energy of Buildings", Master's Degree in Building Engineering and Environmental Recovery.
  • 2010: Adjunct professor at the Université de Savoie – Polytech' Annecy-Chambéry, teaching "Génie Climatique" (Air conditioning systems for buildings), Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • From 2014 to 2019: lecturer in "Design of the Energy Quality of Buildings" (Master's Degree course in Building Engineering-Architecture - University of Catania).
  • Since 2021: lecturer in "Building Physics" (Master's Degree in Building Engineering-Architecture - University of Catania).
  • Since 2023: lecturer in "Environmental and Industrial Physics" – Environmental Physics Module (Degree Course in Prevention Techniques in the Environment and Workplaces - University of Catania).
  • Since 2021: lecturer in "Energy Efficient Buildings and Technical Systems Design" (Master's Degree in Building Engineering-Architecture - University of Catania).
  • Since 2014: supervisor of Master's Degree theses in Building Engineering-Architecture at the University of Catania, and member of the Degree Committee.

Main academic positions:

  • From August 2009 to August 2010: post-doc researcher at the Université de Savoie, Polytech Annecy-Chambéry, Laboratoire Optimisation de la Conception et l'Ingénierie de l'Environnement (LOCIE, France), concerning the "Mathematical modeling and experimental analysis of a solar cooling system with a small-scale absorption machine powered by solar energy".
  • From August 2010 to December 2011: researcher at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in France, on the topic of "Experimental evaluation of phase change materials for the redevelopment of buildings with low thermal inertia".
  • From 2012 to 2018: Research Fellow at the University of Catania.
  • Since 2016: member of the Editorial Board of the international journal "Buildings" (MDPI publisher).
  • 2016: Visiting Professor at the Royal Danish Academy for Fine Arts – School of Architecture (KADK) in Copenhagen.
  • Since 2018: working on behalf of the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-size Enterprises of the European Commission (EASME) as an expert evaluator of projects in the field of energy efficiency of buildings and systems.
  • 2018-2021: Scientific Coordinator of a research agreement between the University of Catania and the Royal Danish Academy for Fine Arts – School of Architecture (KADK) in Copenhagen, concerning the study of sustainable solutions for the energy retrofit of buildings and the analysis of outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas.
  • 2022-2023: Scientific Coordinator for the Agreement between the University of Catania and the Ente Autonomo Regionale Teatro Massimo "Vincenzo Bellini" of Catania, relating to analysis, consultancy and experimental measures for the preparation of energy efficiency studies of the Teatro Massimo "Vincenzo Bellini" in Catania.
  • Since 2022: Scientific Coordinator for the Agreement between the University of Catania and Legambiente Sicilia, aimed at developing project proposals for mitigation and adaptation interventions on an urban and building scale of the effects of climate change.
  • 2024-2026: Scientific Coordinator for the Agreement between the University of Catania and the Municipality of Catania, aimed at drafting the five-year Action Plan for the containment of noise pollution in the city of Catania.
  • Since 2023: member of the Academic Board of the PhD in Systems, Energy, Computer Science and Telecommunications Engineering.
  • Since 2024: Vice-President of the Council of the Bachelor's Degree Course in "Prevention Techniques in the Environment and in the Workplace" (Class: L/SNT4 - Health Professions of Prevention)
