Expected Learning Outcomes

The goal of this class consists in providing to students basic concpets about metrology, measurement methods and measurement instruments (both analog and digital).   Experimental activities in laboratory sessions will receive much attention.

Concepts and knowledge gained in this class will allow future engineers to properly evaluate measurement uncertainty, to effectively perform system characterization and to correctly execute measurements.


Knowledge and understanding


Students will gain knowledge about methods for measurement uncertainty evaluation, about measurement methods and working principles of major electronic instrumentation. Applications will be to major electrical and electronic engineering.

Applying knowledge and understanding

At the end of this class students will have enough competences and knowledge to effectively analyze a measurement system, to identify main functioinalities of measurement systems together with interferying and modifying inputs and appropriate compensating methods.

Making judgements

At the end of this class students will gain adequate maturity level and autonomy for operating as engineers expert in measurement systems. These skills will be enforced through an intense experimental  activity in laboratory.  


Communication skills

Students will gain adequate communication skills thanks to the knowledege of technical languages in the field of metrology and measurements. Team working skills will be enforced through laboratory activities organized in small groups. 


Learning skills

Students will be able to autonomously expand his/her knowledges in the specific field of instrumentation and measurements through the study of specialized books suggested during the lectures, scientific journals and seminars given by experts in the field. 

Course Structure

Class on Electronic Instrumentation and Measurement includes both lectures and laboratory activities. Whenever possible expert seminars will be organized with national and international speakers from industry and academia.

Should teaching be carried out in mixed mode or remotely, it may be necessary to introduce changes with respect to previous statements, in line with the programme planned and outlined in the syllabus

Detailed Course Content

This course aims to transfer basics and some advanced concepts regarding measures and measurements performed with electronic instruments.

An introduction to metrology will be given in order to assess competences regarding the estimation of uncertainties in measurements.

Measurements methodologies will be therefore discussed together with their implementation by using electronic instrumentation.

Both analog and digital electronic instruments will be considered, the working principles will be studied together with the transduction models and the metrological characteristics; some advance issues related to signal processing and noise reduction on measurement results will be also discussed.

A significant part of the course will be devoted to experimental activities in laboratory where the students will be asked to use real instruments, perform measurements, develop Virtual Instruments by using LabView.

Specialized seminars will be held on advanced subjects of basic and industrial research in the area of electronic instrumentations and measurements.
