Mario CACCIATO

Full Professor of Power electronic converters, electrical machines and drives [ING-IND/32]

Mario Cacciato received in 1996 the degree in Electrical Engineering cum laude from the University of Catania, Italy. In 2000 he received the PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Reggio Calabria, Italy.
In 2000 he got a position as Assistant Professor from the University of Rome – ‘La Sapienza’, where he was with the Department of Electrical Engineering from November 2000 to October 2004. In 2004 he obtained the same position at the University of Catania, then, he moved in November 2004 to the University of Catania, where he was with the Department of Electrical, Electronics and System Engineering. After a public race, in 2010 he was eligible as Associate Professor in Italy, then, from 2011 he is with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Informatics of the University of Catania as Associate Professor, teaching courses on Electrical Machines both at first and second level of degree.

He is the coordinator of the master degree course in 'Electrical Engineering'. Member of the Council of the Board of the PhD on 'Ingegneria dei Sistemi, Energetica, Informatica e delle telecomunicazioni' of the University of Catania. Tutor of some PhD students, he was responsible of several final thesis dealing with theoretical and experimental issues on eletrical engineering. He is responsible for the University of Catania of the Double Degree and the international exchange program Erasmus+ with the University of Zilina (SK). He is responsible of the Laboratories of Power Electronics and Electromagnetic Compatibility of CePTIT-DIEEI, that he has collaborated to establish from 2001. Member of the Scientific Board of the University of Catania for Industrial and Information Engineering. He was a member of the Recruitment Board of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Catania.

Main scientific interests of prof. Cacciato concern electrical generation systems from renewable, innovative typologies of electronic power converter, energy optimized control techniques of electric drives, high frequency modeling of electrical drives and EMI reduction.

Prof. Cacciato is author or co-author of more than 160 technical papers, published on journals and proceedings of international conferences, obtained as a result of research activities developed in collaboration with researcher of Italian and foreigner universities, research group of ST-Microelectronics, Centro Ricerche Fiat, and Ansaldo Ricerche.

He was a coordinator of a research unit of PRIN project, founded by the Italian Minister of University and Research on “High efficiency switching converters for photovoltaic systems in automotive applications”. He was or is responsible for the research unit of Catania of the following research projects:
- European Project ECSEL call 2016 'WinSiC4AP' for the period 2017-2020
- European Project ENIAC JU call 2011 “Energy to Smart Grid (E2SG)” 
- MIUR PON Ricerca e Competitività 2007-2013 – “PON01_01725 Nuove Tecnologie Fotovoltaiche per Sistemi Intelligenti Integrati in Edifici - FOTOVOLTAICO”
- MIUR PON R&C Distretti e Laboratori – “PON02_00153 Tecnologie ad alta Efficienza per la Sostenibilità Energetica ed ambientale Onboard- TESEO”
- PO FESR 2007-13 Regione Sicilia Linea 4.1.1.2 - "Rigenerazione Elettrica Evoluta - RIELEVO".

On June 2006 and May 2012 he was a visiting professor at the Department of Electronics and Mechatronics of the University of Zilina, Slovack Republic, with the Socrates/Erasmus program sponsorship.
He received the 'Best Paper Award' during the conference ELEKTRO 2016 and the'Student Encouragement Award' of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ) during the conference IPEC2000 held in Tokyo.

Since 1998, prof. Cacciato is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of New York (IEEE). Since 2004 he collaborates with the Industrial Power Converter and Power Electronics & Components committees of the IEEE Industry Application Society. He is a member of the European Power Electronics And Drives Association (EPE), in the period 2017-20 he serves in the EPE Executive Council. In the period 2011-2016 he chaired the EPE Chapter on Solar Energy. Since 2004 he is a member of Italian AEIT, he was the vice-president of the Catania section of AEIT for the period 2016-2018.

Member of the Editorial Board and Associate Editor of the EPE Journal edited by Taylor & Francis.

Associate Editor of the International Journal of Powertrains, Inderscience Publisher.

Member of the Editorial Board of the international technical-scientific journal "Journal Communications - Scientific Letters of the University of Žilina".

He is a reviewer of the following Journals: IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, Proceedings of IEE (The Institution of Electrical Engineers - UK), Taylor&Francis, Elsevier.
